Common Dreams [Return to Forum]
The most common dreams are: driving a car but not being in control; being chased, usually by someone who you can’t see (and often you feel your legs won’t move as they should); trying to get somewhere but there’s always obstacles in the way; moving house; problems at work; a previous partner suddenly coming back into your life; teeth falling out.

I often dream about having to go somewhere and things keep preventing me from getting there - I cant find the car keys, or the front door wont open, or my legs wont move fast enough - it’s all so frustrating! I’ve been in dreams where someone’s driving the car but i dont know who it is and I’m frightened of where we’re going. I’m sure it all means something but I always forget to write the dreams down as I guess its a good idea to keep a journal…
Hi Curious, someone else driving the car means that someone around you is trying to control your life. Doors are often closed because we are not ready to go through that door at this time. When frightened in a dream turn around and face the fear, unzip what ever it is and you will be surprised how small that fear was, usually something to do with a past problem. Fear based dreams will often resurface in many other situations until you have faced the problem.
Hi I keep dreaming that I cant get to where I am going. I am trying to get to an airport but cannot get my case packed to get there in time or I am in a hotel or building and cannot get to the room I need to go to this is taking over my life what does this mean. jackie
The journey you’re trying to make represents the desire to move away from your present situation and become more independent, but the present responsibilities of your life and other associated ‘baggage’ prevent this from happening; even if you succeed in making the inital step (to reach the hotel), then these obligations (job, family) still hold you back….
I keep having a similar dream. Each situation is different but it follows the same theme of being misled into a situation then being captured and I have to really struggle to get out/escape. I always escape unharmed but wake up scared. Last night was slighlty different, my boyfriend and his family were in my dream. We were in some type of combat and I was hiding under a table and saw the bullets hit the table, my boyfriend was fighting too and I was so scared he would get hurt. We were both protecting his family.
I keep having similar dreams each night. I’d appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks. Jo
Jo, something in your present situation is holding you back from achieving what you wish with your life, and thus building up the relationship you hope for with your boyfriend; promises are being made but not then being followed through, but this seems to relate more to external influences rather than anything your boyfriend or you are specifically in control of… It’s difficult to judge exactly what these external influences might be, so think carefully about what other aspects in these dreams seem to regularly recur.
I just wanted to post a dream that i had when i was very young. It is the earliest dream that i can remember, and it plagued my dreams until i was about ten:
I was watching TV in the family room eating a piece of toast when all of a sudden there was a loud crash outside and all the power went out. Then out from under the couch that i was sitting on popped out a pair of purple and green toes. They looked fuzzy and friendly, but for some reason, i was very frightened of them. So, i jumped over to the love seat that was just a foot or so away, but they popped out again. Now, being only an innocent child, i thought that it was after my toast. So, with all the power i had, i tried to hide the toast and keep it away; after all, i was hungry. I continued to jump back and forth from the sofa to the love seat, but all the while, the toes followed. So, i thought that i would get smart and hide it under the toybox lid. Thinking that i was safe, i went back to the couch and tried to turn on the TV, but the power was still out. I sat there for a few minutes and the toes came out again. I jumped back to the love seat and then to the couch then back again; the toes following me the entire time. Then, as i was jumping from the love seat to the sofa it pulled me down onto the floor. out from under the sofa a big tall masked man came out holding a dagger, he was going to stab me, but i always awoke when he was just inches away.
This dream always scared me… I just wonder what made an innocent child like myself dream such a horrible dream.
I have reaccurring dreams of heading to a destination but getting held up from getting there…finding my way, losing something or just plain held up. Very frustrating Comes in differring themes but the same prolonged feeling of “can’t get there”.
I have dreams of trying to go from one level of a building or structure to another, usually down, but the steps or ladders are either not there or collapse as I try to step on them.
Both Brad and Annette’s dreams reveal the frustrations and hinderances they are having trying to achieve their own specific goals in life, with Annette trying to take a step back (go downstairs) and relax but without success.
i keep having the same thing dream that no one else seems to have had when asked them. it doesnt matter what i am doing or where i am in my dream, but in my dream i cant open my eyes no matter how hard i try, once i cant open my eyes they stay like that till i wake up. the feelings of not being able to open my eyes in my dream leaves me wondering why this is happening ?
I’ve been dreaming alot about my ex husband latley were actually going threw a divorce at the moment we dont even talk anymore. My dream is being at were we use to live together and him sneeking to see me but there always someone else in our old room with him under the blankets I can’t see who it is but in my dream were talking good!!!
Dreams about an ex-partner are very common, as the normal doubts resurface in a ‘what if’ dream with your subconcious running through different scenarios to check that you made the correct decision. The other person in your dream could a version of you, trying to stop you from making the same mistake again.
I have a recurrent shopping dream. I go to the same places - there are about three in my repetoire so far. I never buy anything. Some are nice department stores and others are just markets (indoor and out)
The very first dream I remember having was one where my bed was covered in snakes with me lying on it - I would have been about 4 at the time. I am terrified of snakes now and can’t bare to see one even in a picture
Any ideas what these mean?
